Significant update

A SIGNIFICANT update to our burial plot and seven skeletons.
I have just had a call from an expert with Shropshire Council Environment History Team, who has looked at the files surrounding the excavation work here.
The reference to 1992 in the archive document I found was from a report by contractors who were doing excavation work for new building works in 1992 at a house two doors away. They were already aware of the discovery of a likely cemetery in our garden and were covering their backs. They in turn referred to a 1976 Ordnance Survey mapping report of a burial ground at the rear of our cottage.
The seven skeletons were actually unearthed sometime between the late 1930s and 1950 while the foundations were dug for the kitchen extension! In those days planning permission was not required for such works. They were thought to be Roman remains, but as there was no Carbon 14 dating techniques back then, there was no way to precisely date how old they were. The council guy said there was no way of knowing what happened to them. He thought they might have been given a Christian burial in the local churchyard OR left in place.
But of greater interest he said that without further excavation work there was no way of knowing how many more there were or are.
It is in the kitchen were our unexplained activities take place.
Fascinating stuff.

  1. So interesting – all this information. What a find! Are you still having problems in the kitchen? Haven’t heard from you in a while so gather life has been hectic. Enjoying reading all your posts and as soon as able will comment more often. Did you manage to read In A Word: Murder? Any comments? I am trying to catch up with everyone, since my operation was postponed I am trying to reconnect. Having thought I’d be out of action (more than I am now), I let things slip a bit. Anyway congrats on the award…I am naughty….got a few I need to acknowledge but it is time consuming doing all that goes with them. Well done, deserved by the way. Do reconnect soon. Jane x
