Unique book of international poetry available in paperback and Kindle

BLOG LUMINANCE paperbacks

A UNIQUE collection of international poetry, first published as an e-book in 2018 is now available worldwide as a large format paperback.

While global warming, poverty, pollution, homelessness, the refugee crisis and warfare continue to dominate world news, a diverse group of global poets have turned their spotlight on the frailty and hope of humanity.

Their book: LUMINANCE – Words for a World Gone Wrong is now published worldwide by Amazon as a stunning 125 page paperback.

The writers live 11,000 miles apart, across 18 time zones, in Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, Palestine, Japan, England, Scotland and six different states of the USA.

They include a mum of four, a 17-year-old student, a haiku writer, a freedom fighter, a grandfather, a modern day minstrel, a novelist and a self-proclaimed ‘mystic’.

Their poetry displays the diversity of their home cities and cultures and form the unique nature of the book.

The writers of LUMINANCE are:

Austie M Baird is a 34-year-old mother raising four young children in rural eastern Oregon, USA.

Sophie Bowns, 27, from Cumbria in England, is a teaching assistant, poet and a fiction author, with seven published books to her name.

Hanalee is a widely travelled 18-year-old gardening enthusiast from Phoenix, Arizona, now at university in Iowa.

Bridgford Hashimoko, 54, is an EFL teacher in Tokyo, Japan, who is fascinated by the many forms and variations of Haiku.

Annabel James, from Oklahoma, USA, writes poetry as a positive outlet to manage a chaos of emotions and thoughts into a form that she can share.

Anjali Love is a mystic, poet, writer, storyteller, artist, and tantric yogini, from Melbourne, Australia and is a lover of life with insatiable wanderlust.

Heather Lynn Matthews is a married 32-year-old mother of two, from Ontario, Canada, who loves to write poetry and short stories.

Joseph Nichols lives in Kentucky, USA. By day, he works for the state transportation cabinet and by the weekend he is a minstrel and DJ.

Nic Outterside, from Wolverhampton, England spent 28 years in journalism. He discovered the therapeutic power of poetry following a nervous breakdown in 2013.

Brotibir Roy is a 18-year-old and a 12th standard student in Dhaka, Bangladesh, who writes to pacify his mind and to play with words.

Megan Taylor, 22, is an English and Film graduate from Aberdeen University in Scotland.

Troy Turner was born and raised in Los Angeles, USA. Nothing has captivated him so much as the written word and the interaction between author and reader.

Zanita is a 38-year-old college lecturer from Gaza in Palestine. When not teaching, she publishes books to support the liberation of her country from the control of Israel.

Nic Outterside is the editor and publisher of LUMINANCE and said: “I have edited many publications over the years, but none has been as challenging and exciting as this.

“I was lucky to have so many amazingly talented and beautiful people contributing to this hugely diverse project.

“I hope you enjoy and share their end result… we all think it is quite amazing.”

Award winning writer’s first two poetry books now available at sale prices

A multi-award winning UK writer is celebrating the success of his latest chart-topper by offering his first two poetry books at new discount prices.

Wolverhampton-based Nic Outterside quit his 28 year career in newspaper and magazine journalism following a nervous breakdown in June 2013.

He began the slow road to recovery under the watchful eyes of his doctor and the support of his family. Part of the therapy was for him to begin writing and talking about the life experiences which had led to his breakdown.

His first paperback book The Hill – Songs and Poems of Darkness and Light, published in November 2014. It was met with international acclaim and the first 1,000 print edition sold out.

In May 2018 he published a sequel Another Hill – Songs and Poems of Love and Theft.

Now following the stunning sales of his most recent book Death in Grimsby – 50 Years Following Brighton & Hove Albion, Nic has decided to discount his first two books to open up his other work to new readers.

“When I released The Hill in November 2014, I was struggling to get back to a life of sorts and fighting my way out of a corner,” explains Nic.

“By the time Another Hill – Songs and Poems of Love and Theft was concluded I was so far out of the corner you wouldn’t find me.

“Then when Death in Grimsby stormed up the Amazon sales charts this summer to reach #2 I realised I had exceeded any expectations of life I may have had six years ago, and had at last found my way home.”

Seagulls legends give personal boost to new Brighton & Hove Albion book on eve of launch

BLOG launch

PAST and present legends of Brighton and Hove Albion have given personal endorsements to a new best-selling book Death in Grimsby – 50 Years Following Brighton & Hove on the eve of its launch this week.

The book, which chronicles Albion fan Nic Outterside’s 50 years supporting his beloved home town team is set for a double-headed launch in Brighton and Worthing on Thursday and Friday (15th & 16th August).

The book has already made hundreds of sales in Australia, Scotland, Spain, Germany, Wales, Italy, Canada and the USA, as well here back at home in England.

Death in Grimsby currently stands at Number 2 in the Amazon Football Reference sales chart and at Number 3 in their Most Wished For chart.

Early purchasers of the book have included several former Albion players and the personal support of 1983 FA Cup Finalist and England legend Gary Stevens.

Death in Grimsby is dedicated to Nic’s own Albion hero Kit Napier – the club’s leading post war goal scorer, until recently overtaken by Glenn Murray – who sadly died just a few weeks before the book was published. Kit’s two sons Robin and Chris, who live in South Africa, have sent their own good wishes for the publication’s success.

Now Nic has received a personal email from the Albion’s former owner and chairman Dick Knight who wrote: “I’ve started it and a very interesting read it is… I hope it all goes well and the book is a big success!”

He then received a letter from current owner and chairman Tony Bloom who wrote: “It’s great to have someone with such a long history supporting our club, and it’s wonderful that you’ve been able to document it in this book.”

Nic said: “I am overcome with the support I have received for this book. I never expected this reaction when I set out to write Death in Grimsby last October.

“To get support from former players, who as a small child I watched as Albion heroes, is breath-taking and to then get personal praise from the two men who saved our club from extinction and moulded it into the Premier League giant of today is mind-blowing. I am so grateful.

“But for me the thing which leaves a huge lump in my throat is to have made good friends with the two sons of Kit Napier – my first and forever sporting hero.”

The book’s formal launch, with personal signings and special guests, will take place at two venues in Brighton and Worthing on the eve of the Albion’s first home game of the 2019/20 season against West Ham next weekend.

The first launch event is from 7pm on Thursday 15 August at the Caxton Arms, North Gardens, Brighton. The second event is from 6pm on Friday 16 August at the Castle Ale House, Newland Road, Worthing. Everyone is welcome!

  • Death in Grimsby is a collection of 21 short stories which charts the first 50 years that Nic supported his beloved Albion, starting with his first game at the Goldstone in 1967 and finishing with a match against Wolves at Molineux in April 2017, when his club all but mathematically secured promotion to the promised land of the Premier League.

Now three ways to buy unique anthology of South Asian poetry and prose

DUE to huge demand there are now three different ways to buy the blockbuster Asian Voices – a unique anthology of poetry and prose by emerging writers from South Asia.

First published in February this year, the 240 page large format Asian Voices paperback met worldwide acclaim for its originality and diverse content.

A Kindle e-book edition of the book has also sold widely.

Now the book has been published in a slimmed down 100 page Director’s Cut edition.

Divided by partition, war and politics, but united by creativity, brilliance and common humanity, Asian Voices brought together 20 writers from across South Asia to shine a light on their diverse societies.

In 37,000 words, across more than 240 pages and two dozen images, these contributors paint graphic pictures of love, beauty, loss, patriarchy, disease and death in their respective countries of India, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

From chilly Kabul in the north, through Karachi, Delhi and Kolkata to the searing heat of Hyderabad in the south, their tales in poetry and prose are compelling.

The writers include an artist from Lahore, an engineer from Mumbai, a psychologist from Delhi, a social reformer from Jaipur, two 12th grade school students, plus many more.

The project has been pulled together by retired British newspaper editor Nic Outterside.

Nic explains the reason for the new Director’s Cut edition: “While the Asian Voices paperback sells well in the UK and Europe, its sheer size, weight and resultant costs meant many potential buyers in South Asia simply could not afford it, so were left with just the Kindle e-book.

“After consulting the writers I decided to create a special slimmed down edition, which has been judicially edited from 240 to just 100 pages.

“We hope to it will encourage many people to buy the Director’s Cut edition and some may then want to go on and purchase its big sister edition too.”

All three versions of Asian Voices are available directly from Amazon

BLOG Butter PiesBLOG scratchingsBLOG Scotch Pies

A NEW best-selling Brighton & Hove Albion paperback is set for a formal launch at two Sussex venues later this month and it also promises to be a gourmet feast of football food.

Death in Grimsby – 50 Years Following Brighton & Hove Albion was written, edited and published by Albion fan Nic Outterside, and given a soft launch in May among friends and fellow fans.

It quickly became a best seller and stands at Number 2 in the Amazon Football Reference sales chart and at Number 3 in their Most Wished For chart.

The book’s formal launch, with personal signings and special guests, will take place at two venues in Brighton and Worthing on the eve of the Albion’s first home game of the 2019/20 season against West Ham on 17 August.

The first launch event is from 7pm on Thursday 15 August at the Caxton Arms, North Gardens, Brighton. The second event is from 6pm on Friday 16 August at the Castle Ale House, Newland Road, Worthing.

And both evenings will feature free samples of football food from around the UK.

One of the most popular features of Death in Grimsby are the sections entitled Who Ate All the Pies, which look at the diverse array of food and drink available at different football grounds.

So Nic has arranged samples of unique foods from Barnsley, Berwick Rangers, Birmingham City, Huddersfield Town, Leeds United, Preston North End, Wolves and Wrexham.

These include Scotch pies, Welsh cakes, Yorkshire meat and potato pies, Lancashire butter pies, Birmingham flapjack, Barnsley pork pies, genuine Wolverhampton pork crackling and take-home sachets of Bovril!

“I wanted the launch to be a little different from the usual and the way to book buyers and a football fans’ hearts is clearly through their stomachs,” joked Nic.

“So I hope that those who attend the launch events will also sample a bit of genuine football fayre.”

Death in Grimsby charts Nic’s passion for his far from ordinary home town club for more than half a century. Among 50,000 words and 115 images it is a collection of personal stories which will resonate with every football supporter, no matter which club they may follow.
